A continuation of the weather, which is still stuck with cool temperatures for August, grey skies and too much wind to be pleasant. Another visit to Blackdown on Friday presented a similar theme to the last couple of weeks, although the slight drop in wind did allow me to find a couple of feeding flocks on the main heath. Dominated by Willow Warblers with over 20 birds, but did include a female Redstart, 3 Tree Pipit and 4 Spotted Flycatchers. There were more Dartford Warblers and Stonechats showing and a couple of Common Whitethroats. 8 Common Buzzards went up together on the first thermal of the day.
I went to the coast on Saturday morning as the wind had shifted slightly to a SE direction, the seawatch produced a few birds of interest, with 5 Teal, 13 Common Scoter, 2 Bar-tailed Godwits and 91 Common Terns which surprisingly included 2 tight flocks heading strongly East, which is what should have been happening in Spring. A Common Sandpiper was momentarily with the Turnstones on the beach and 47 Sand Martin moved through. A quick stop at the Ferry pool was productive with the pool at last looking good for waders. The Temmincks Stint was visible along with Green Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper, Spotted Redshank, Greenshank, 2 Avocets, 40 Dunlin, 120 Black-tailed Godwit and 80 Lapwings. A reasonable mornings birding.
