Monday 9th November - Lockdown 2 - Day 5

Another foggy and damp morning. Being a Monday, it was a struggle to get going, I had put the moth trap out again last night as it was very mild, 20 moths with 2 new ones a Yellow-Line Quaker and a Red-Line Quaker

The Grey Wagtail was next to the garden pond again first thing and I lingered in the kitchen waiting for the fog to lift and debating with myself where to walk but opted again to go to Furnace Pond. Despite the early poor visibility there were still a number of birds around and the lane down to Park farm had a small number of Fieldfare and a flock  of 11 Lesser Redpoll. Thrushes were again the main theme with plenty of Redwing around but the change being mostly Fieldfares, I saw at least 60 birds. I find these thrushes really enigmatic and Redwing and Fieldfare flocks a real sign of Winter. Each group seemed to have a couple of Mistle Thrushes either tagging along or chasing away, I couldn't work out which.

The large arable field, sown with Winter Wheat this year, had a Woodlark fly over and later a Skylark. The Furnace Pond held the same birds as Saturday with several Mandarin, Teal, Grey Heron, Cormorant and Moorhen. A single Buzzard was the only raptor. I had been hoping to see a Goshawk and despite some nervous activity from the crows and Woodpigeons nothing showed. It would be unusual not to see one in November , but it may take some better visibility.

I got back home around midday and it rained most of the afternoon, but I'd tallied up 42 species which is reasonably good for the location and the Lock-down list moves to 53 with the addition of Woodlark.
